Este blog me sirve de cajón de sastre para recoger los retazos que me sirven de una forma u otra de inspiración para escribir la pequeña e-storia de la gran Emily, o algo.

Vocabulary game for intermediate to advanced students. (ESL)

This ESL game is based in a popular TV quiz. I’m sure you know it.

You need: paper flash-cards with plenty vocabulary (I made about fifty flash cards of food items, ingredients, etc. These could be pre-taught or mixed but not completely new to them)

It takes 20 minutes up to a whole hour if you want to make a competition out of it.

Explain the mechanics of the game: Student one needs to guess the item, Student two will provide clues but they can only use one word at a time. Then student one  will guess, but they can only say one word. Allow them to have several tries, otherwise it could result being stressful.

They’ll need to use general words, like categories, shapes, colours, nationalities anything they can relate to the item that they are given, but not brands! If they get stuck they can use a filler like “another” (meaning try another) but also “contrary” or “synonym”

Students make pairs, and  take turns to guess up to three words. you may want to time it.

example: the word to be guessed  is milk

student two: drink
student one: water
student two: white
student one: another
student two: breakfast
student one: milk

They’ll learn: new vocabulary, categories, etc. they’ll consolidate general words, vocabulary, colours, and shapes. It will help them built a semantic map of any semantic field you want to use.
